The problem of Free Will - 1950 Words
In the following essay I will describe the problem of free will and explain several different responses to the problem. These responses will be derived from the determinist, libertarian, and compatibilist views. I will end the essay by arguing that the compatibilist view seems to best address the problem of free will, but does not necessarily solve it. The problem of free will arises from two conflicting ideas. The first idea is that people have free will. Having free will means that people have the ability to choose and act on what they would like to do. Most people seem accept this idea easily and live their lives believing that to some extent they are in control of the choices they make. If this idea is true then people can be held responsible and subsequently praised or blamed for their choices or actions. For example, a male student named Bob can be blamed for cheating if he chooses to use his notes while taking his test even though the professor instructed his class to not use their notes. He can be blamed for cheating because Bob chose to use his notes on his own and no one forced Bob to cheat. The second of the two conflicting ideas that most people seem to readily accept is known as determinism. Determinism is at odds with free will because it states that ââ¬Å"every event has a cause,â⬠meaning even the choices that we make are not caused by ourselves (Conee and Sider 113). In other words, the cause of something can be indefinitely traced backwards. This is a great strategy to be cost effective and be able to maximize whatever profits they may have; however companies do not realize the effect that they have on those who are less fortunate. For example, many jobs are taken from the countries that these companies are based in, the loss that local producers face can be quite severe when companies decide toRead MoreThe Problem Of A Free Lunch1008 Words à |à 5 Pagesââ¬Å"Thereââ¬â¢s no such thing as a free lunchâ⬠a very common saying in Economics because it emphasizes that every decision requires a trade-off, and although one person may be getting a deal there is always another side to the story. From big evils like Hitlerââ¬â¢s Holocaust and slavery, to small evils like getting a papercut and getting stuck in the rain (perhaps to some this might be a big evil), evil is basically anything that is not good. For theologians, evil poses several problems, most notably when it comes to the existence of God. To most theologists, God has a set definition. God is definedRead MoreThe Problem Of Global Free Trade1845 Words à |à 8 Pagesand business abroad. This argument, if proved to be true, would refute the Cosmological Argument for Godââ¬â¢s Existence. The Cosmological Argument states that not every being can be a dependent being without infinite regress (which is believed to be impossible), so there exists a tri-omni self dependent being knownRead MoreThe Problem Of Evil : The Free Will Defense And The Supralapsarian Theodicy1514 Words à |à 7 PagesA3- The logical problem of evil basically states that there is an inconsistency with the existence of God and the existence of evil. In other words, saying that God is all good, omnipotent and omniscient, meaning that he knows everything and has absolute power, it doesnââ¬â¢t not make sense to conceive that he would let evil exist in the world. It explains that evil is bad and a good God want to get rid of it and he would know exactly how to do that. So if evil still exist then God must not exist according
